Events

  • Approximately 40% of Latino kids are overweight or obese, and unhealthy food contributes to disease, especially in Latino families who lack access to healthy foods and nutrition education, Salud America! tells us. They're therefore hosting a tweetchat for #SaludTues on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at 1 p.m. ET, on "Why Culinary Health Education Matters," co-hosted by CHEF – Culinary Health Education for Families, Farm to School, and the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living.
  • The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) is holding a Summer Meals Matter Conference Call on "Teens and Summer Meals," November 1, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. ET. This call will explore strategies and promising practices for drawing more teens to summer meal sites and keeping them engaged all summer long. Register for the free call here.

Research

  • The Centers for Disease Control has released the 2018 State Action Guides on Fruits and Vegetables, showing how states measure up in terms of access and affordability and sharing ways to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
  • A new report from FRAC shows that more than 1.2 million children benefited from afterschool suppers on an average weekday in October 2017, an 11 percent increase from the previous year. Despite the increase in participation, though, only one child received an afterschool supper for every 19 low-income children who participated in the National School Lunch Program in October 2017. FRAC notes that, "Because afterschool suppers are a relatively new option ... every state has room to grow participation in the 2018–2019 school year and beyond."
