SAYO-Y: Survey of Academic and Youth Outcomes-Youth Survey

What is SAYO-Y?

SAYO-Y is one of three research-based measurement tools that make up the APAS System, a field-tested, user-friendly suite of evaluation tools built with OST in mind.

Research suggests that certain youth experiences and outcomes are critical to future success, and SAYO-Y can show where your program is succeeding or areas in need of extra attention. Use SAYO-Y to survey your youth participants (Grades 4-12) and collect data about what they are getting out of your program. The tool is adaptable and can be tailored to gather data in all or some of the following areas:

  • Program Experiences
  • Future Expectations (Grades 6-12 only)
  • Sense of Competence
  • Program Impacts

How does it work?

SAYO-Y collects youth perspectives and opinions in three dimensions: program experiences, future expectations, and sense of competence. The tool is designed with a “menu” approach. So program administrators should select the dimensions of the tool that are most relevant to the program and goals for continuous program improvement.

Who is it for?

  • OST leaders, program directors, supervisors, curriculum and education coordinators, researchers, and 21st Century Community Learning Center staff and teachers
  • Recommended for well-established programs (1 year or older) that offer a variety of programming to 25 or more youth participants who attend on a regular basis
  • Programs with youth in Grades 4-12

How do I get trained to use it?

The APAS tools are free to use at your program site after you complete the required prerequisite training program. Training on the SAYO-Y tool is available either in-person or online. If you are interested in SAYO-Y for your program site, you can receive training for the entire APAS System, or training only for SAYO-Y. Most programs find it favorable to complete our online training asynchronously through our training portal. Our online training subscription includes unlimited access to the training portal for one year.
