Karen Lachance
Assistant Director
Karen B. Lachance is Assistant Director of the National Institute on Out-of-School Time. Karen is responsible for contract negotiations and processing and manages the financial side of all funds and projects in which NIOST participates. In addition to her financial work, Karen participates in project and proposal development, project management and personnel management. She also actively participates on the teams that work on the Afterschool Program Assessment System (APAS) Project and the Afterschool Matters Initiative.
Prior to joining NIOST, Karen held the General Manager positions in several retail stores, including Borders (2000-2006) and Learningsmith (1996-1999), where she directed all operations including hiring, training, merchandising, inventory, and cafe management. Complementing Karen's managerial and financial expertise is her strong interest in history and research. While living in Valdez, Alaska Karen worked as a researcher with Prince William Sound Community College and in 1994 published a book titled Valdez: A Brief Oral History. While a senior in Barnard College, Columbia University she completed a senior research project Women in Alaska: 1898-1920.
