Director Ellen Gannett to speak at National Conference on Summer Learning
October 1, 2013
NIOST Director Ellen Gannett will be speaking at the panel Healthy Summers for Kids: Turning Risk into Opportunity. Summer presents special challenges to young people’s nutrition and physical fitness as well as education. Childhood tendencies toward obesity increase dramatically during the summer, while 85 percent of students receiving federally subsidized meals during the school year do not receive them during the summer. Strong summer programs can provide the nutrition and exercise as well as education that young people need. An expert panel will discuss the implications of relevant research, the current state of public awareness, policy, and programmatic practice, and what both program providers and policymakers can do to better address the issues.
